Richard is a sculptor who works both figuratively and abstractly. Usually he begins in water clays and then fires them in a kiln to become terra cottas. Later they are cast in bronze at a foundry. That allows him to manipulate the piece further, either by working on the intermediary wax step or by adding the final patina. Richard began with an interest in figural forms, especially women, in boats. Gradually this has changed into an interest in more abstract forms, sometimes suggested by figures and boats, but also by many other sources, including architectural elements: towers, walls, arches, plants, rocks, and waves. Since about 2007 Richard has concentrated mainly on abstract sculptures.
