Call for Artists! 14th Annual Small Works Show

440 Gallery announces the Call for Entries for the 14th annual Small Works Show 2018. This national, juried exhibition celebrates the innovation of artists who create work on a small scale, in a broad range of media and styles. The exhibition will be on display in the 440 Gallery, Park Slope, Brooklyn space from Thursday, November 29, 2018 through Friday, December 28, 2018.

Juror: Nicole Kaack

Nicole Kaack is an independent curator and writer from Northern California, currently based in Queens, New York. She works as the Dedalus Fellow in the museum archives at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, where she has assisted with archival displays for MoMA’s upcoming 2019 reinstallation as well as for Being Modern at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris. Kaack will be the 2018-2019 Curatorial Fellow at The Kitchen, New York, where she will coordinate programming of the Language Art Body discussion series, as well as acting as artist liaison for the annual art auction. Kaack’s writing has been published by Whitehot Magazine, artcritical, Art Viewer, SFAQ / NYAQ / AQ, and Artforum. Organized exhibitions include Science Fictions at CRUSHCURATORIAL, New York (upcoming), Re:Framed at the Re: Art Show, Brooklyn (2018), Paperless at Small Editions, Brooklyn (2017), Enveloped at Small Editions, Brooklyn (2017), and Wordless at Small Editions, Brooklyn (2017). Kaack is the co-coordinator and moderator of a series of artist conversations at CRUSHCURATORIAL, New York, co-founder of the newsletter of missing out, and co-director of the artist publication prompt:



Eligibility: Open to artists who are at least 18 years old at the time of entry and who have a US shipping address. Work must be no more than 12 inches (12”) in any direction including the framing or mounting, or video monitors. The artwork may represent any subject matter. All media—including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, drawings, sculpture in any medium, collage, printmaking, photography and digital media—will be considered. Accepted work must be suitably framed, wired and ready for hanging. Works on paper must be framed under plexiglass or glass. Maximum weight of sculpture: 30 pounds. Wall mounted monitors must be provided for videos. These eligibility requirements will be strictly enforced and work will be refused if it does not comply with the requirements.

Acceptance: Accepted work may be refused if it does not conform to the entered image. Absolutely NO substitutions of accepted works will be allowed. All accepted work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibit.

Sales: The gallery will take 30% commission on any work sold. Work not for sale must be marked “NFS” in the Price section of the submission form. NO “POR” (price on request) sales.

Entry Fee: The entry fee is $40 for 1 – 3 works, $5 for each additional work up to 6 total.

Entry Requirements: All entries must be submitted electronically. (See below for link to online submission form.) Judging will be done only from JPEGs or web links to videos. No other formats will be accepted; this includes Power Point presentations or any other imaging software. JPEGs must be 72 dpi and at least 600 pixels but not greater that 1200 pixels in either direction. Maximum file size for any individual image is 1 MB. For video works, please upload a still image in the application and email the gallery with a link to the video on youtube or vimeo to view the entry.

JPEG images MUST BE labeled Last Name_FIRST Name_1, 2, 3, etc.

For example:

Files which are mislabeled or lack the artist’s name will not be viewed by the juror.

Work must be no more than 12" in any direction including the framing or mounting, or video monitors. This will be strictly enforced. The size given for works should be the framed size. Height must be given before width regardless of whether the work is a vertical or a horizontal. Entry form must be filled out completely. Failure to follow instructions may result in the nullification of your entry. Your payment will serve asyour acceptance of the terms and conditions stated in this prospectus. Fees are non-refundable.

Delivery of Work:

1. Hand-delivered work will be accepted at the gallery ONLY on Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18, 12– 6pm. Packaging may be removed from the gallery at the time of delivery.

2. Shipped work must arrive at the gallery from Wednesday, November 14 – Saturday, November 17, in a reusable container. A computer-generated return label for return of work MUST be enclosed. NO EXCEPTIONS. Pre-paid shipping arrangements must be made through UPS or FedEx websites or with other shippers who will pick up work at the gallery. NO U.S. POSTAL SERVICE OR C.O.D. RETURNS. DO NOT SEND CASH, CHECK, STAMPS, OR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION FOR RETURN OF WORK.

Return of Work: Hand-delivered work must be picked up on Saturday December 29, 12-6pm or Sunday December 30, 12-6pm. Shipped works will be returned the week of January 2nd. The gallery accepts no responsibility for work not retrieved on pick-up dates and will charge the artist $5.00 a day thereafter for storage. After 30 days the gallery may dispose of the work.

Liability: Great care will be taken with all work, but artists are responsible for insuring their own work if they wish. 440 Gallery will not be responsible for any loss or damage to work while on the premises or in transit to or from the gallery. The submission of a work of art to this exhibition shall be understood to constitute an agreement on the part of the artist to the conditions set forth in this prospectus.

NOV 29, Thursday: Opening Reception, 6-8pm.

DEC 28: Friday: Show closes 7pm.

DEC 29, Saturday: Pick up unsold work, 12-6pm.

DEC 30, Sunday: Pick up unsold work, 12-6pm.
